Does lip size matter when playing brass instruments?
Hi everyone!
Sorry if this question sounds a bit silly, but I was planning to play French Horn in my high school's band, but I have fairly large lips and I was curious as to whether this would effect the difficulty of playing French Horn, as I hear it is already a difficult instrument. I am already very advanced in music, so I don't think it should be too much of a problem, but I was still curious so I asked anyway.

I don't think it matters because I've encountered all types of people who have what on the surface would be a physical limitation to performing their instrument, but they work at it and pull it off just fine because of their focus on proper technique. You do need supple, flexible lips, but that comes with lots of practice, good teachers, and time.
When I started learning my instrument, it didn't come easy for me so I thought I physically didn't have large enough lungs to play. I then heard of someone who had lung cancer and had half of their lungs removed, but are able to play professionally because of their excellent methods. In the end, it was efficient use of air that matters more than volume of air. I think that is the same with lip size. Some people might have perfect sized lips but haven't worked on the minute embouchure muscles to make those lips worth anything where someone else has worked at it and does their practice and have no trouble at all.
