What information is available about this Chelsea Clock Co. clock from the U.S.S. Missouri?
The clock was taken out of a dumpster from theU.S.S Missouri in Bremerton, Washington in 1958.
Chelsea clock makers have been making professional clocks since 1897. It is a British company that has a lot of fans in the U.S. Elvis purchased Chelsea clocks. Teddy Roosevelt through Bill Clinton have had Chelsea clocks in the White House. Over the years they have virtually been standards on-board U.S. Navy ships. They are reliable and backed up by a professional repairs department.
I did a search on eBay and found a number of Chelsea nautical clocks. Some are more decorative than others and presumably worth more than others. They range in price from $175 to $2,300. eBay has stands specifically designed to hold Chelsea Clocks.
The Mighty Mo was commissioned in 1944 and saw service through 1991. The USS Missouri was used during the Korean War and was then decommissioned into the United States Navy Reserve Fleet - I am sure the Pacific Reserve Fleet. Guess what. One of the storage sites for the Pacific Reserve Fleet is close to Bremerton...near the shipyard to facilitate easier reactivation. I would not be surprise if some of the ships had equipment removed and in some cases thrown into dumpsters. There are Chelsea Nautical Clocks on eBay from the same vintage.
