What was German art like before WWII?
Was it the same? or more open?
Well, The Nazi regime banned modern art. So art during the Nazi's was propaganda art. Because all the famous artist back to Rome and ancient Greece were being looted and hid by the Nazi Hierarchy. Herman Goering had a larger art collection then most moder museums, it took and entire train to haul it. So they may have banned it, but all the real art was stolen in the name of "national security". So there was no real art in the during the Nazi era and all the modern art or Expressionism art was all banned. After that the USSR, would rather fiance nukes then art museum's like the Czars.
But the art genre at the time before the Nazi's came to power was, Expressionism, which had its origins in Germany also. But before The Nazis and word war two the Expressionism is the tendency of an artist to distort reality for an emotional effect; it is a subjective art form. Expressionism is exhibited in many art forms, including painting, literature, theatre, film, architecture and music. The term often implies emotional angst.
Expressionism worked with arbitrary colors as well as jarring compositions. In reaction and opposition to French Impressionism which focused on rendering the sheer visual appearance of objects, Expressionist artists sought to capture emotions and subjective interpretations: It was not important to reproduce an aesthetically pleasing impression of the artistic subject matter; the Expressionists focused on capturing vivid emotional reactions through powerful colors and dynamic compositions instead. The leader of Der Blaue Reiter, Kandinsky, would take this a step further. He believed that with simple colors and shapes the spectator could perceive the moods and feelings in the paintings, therefore he made the move to abstraction.
