Key Day Anniversary
All-day summer activities for a couple in their 50s?
What are some good activities in the Central PA area for a couple in their mid-50's? I'd like to give my parents a gift for their anniversary that will conveniently take them out of the house for several hours (five or more) so that my boyfriend and I can have some privacy. They approve of the boyfriend, we're not sneaking around, we just feel more comfortable when they're not within earshot and not in danger of accidentally intruding. We live near Hershey, so anything within an hour's drive is good; things around Philadelphia might also work because we have relatives there. My parents are pretty low-key and simple, but they do appreciate fancier things. Activities can't be too strenuous because my mom has a knee replacement. They both really like dogs and 60s classic rock music, but otherwise their music tastes differ. I'm kind of at a loss for things for them since they don't have a lot in common and they don't go out and do a lot of stuff together.
Have them spend some time in Philly - they can eat in the reading Terminal Market (near the City Hall) - there are 89 vendors there, so between eating and shopping, they will be fine. They can go around the corner to Macy's - used to be the Wanamaker store - and listen to the free concerts on the huge pipe organ, heard several times a day. Take a tour of the Masonic Temple - GORGEOUS - and of the course the Masons are not a religious group, but a civic and fraternal order (like a lot of them, they do like dressing up and rituals - so?). Go thru the Philadelphia Academy of Art - NOT the big art museum, this one is lovely, and the architecture and interior design alone are worth the visit. Again - steps from the Masonic temple and City Hall. All of these things are in the same neighborhood - an *I* had a knee replacement this January, and walked around this fine (and I am 61) - there are places to sit, etc. You can also take the elevator all the way to the top of City Hall - right under Franklin's feet - and walk around the circle and take some really nice pictures.
Want them gone LONGER? There are two Marriotts in the middle of all this - we stayed at the Courtyard (nice building!) and next door is another one - Residence Inn. You can give them a NIGHT - and they can spend the best part of the two days - and get up and have a delicious Amish breakfast at the Terminal Market (open at 8 - get at the door by 7:45, and make a BEELINE for the seats!)
