What would you include in an article about Animals Rights?
I am writing an article about animal rights for my school newspaper, but I am stuck. What would you write? No, I am NOT asking you to write it for me. Just please help with ideas.
Also, this is how I started it:
You’ve seen the commercials. The haunting melodies playing in the background as the camera displays mournful eyes, all while moving in slow motion, and you think to yourself, “Why?”
Why, indeed, are innocent creatures treated poorly?

Most humans don't know that all mammals have the same basic nervous system so that what would give a human pain also gives other mammals the same pain. The difference is that we have a big cerebral cortex (the gray matter) that allows us to give meaning to the pain and to deal with it without just reacting to it.
This might be too controversial but our western religions give us permission to treat other creatures as underlings - even though there are rules about treating animals justly in the Old Testament and in the Koran - by being interpreted as putting us "at the top of the heap". We use our religion to justify our mistreatment of other humans and animals.
Animals that will be sacrificed for our nourishment deserve to be treated humanely. I grew up on a poultry ranch and this was drummed into us kids... that the chickens destined for slaughter were giving their lives for us and were not toys to be abused. Later, I learned that the treatment an animal receives before being killed effects the quality of its meat. Seeing chickens crammed into large cages that were piled one on top of another on flatbed trucks and going 60 mph on the freeway - with some of the chickens' heads drooping out of the cages like they were already dead - made me sick. Why treat an animal so cruelly when it's about to be killed and then sold to us to eat?
How a person treats something that is smaller and weaker is a sign of that person's level of civility. You often see the worse treatment in the poorest parts of town because people have rough lives and take out their frustrations on children and animals.
