Is It Normal For 8 Month Baby To Understand Words?
When do babies begin to understand words?
My son is 32 weeks old, and just last week, he has seemed to pick up some words.
I say clock, he looks at the clock in our kitchen. I say telephone, he looks at the phone. Same go for the words pictures, air plane (he has an air plane shelf in his bedroom), teddy bear, polar bear (a different stuffed animal than teddy bear, and on the other side of the room), and obviously mama and dada. Is this advanced for his age or is this when they start understanding words?

No, this is not unusual. My daugther first said, "mama" clearly and with meaning at age 2 months. That however, does not necessarily mean that you have a child genius on your hands either. This is more rare for a boy than a girl to make those developmental milestones that early. But, it does happen. Now my daughter is no Einstein, she is 7 now - but she is keenly smart with language, reading and understanding advanced concepts. She has deficiencies in other areas. For instance, she could read and understand my entire answer here but if I asked her to spell half the words, she would be unable to do that. Math is also another matter entirely for her. She has to work on that and has trouble thinking beyond just memorizing facts to thinking about the number patterns and such in figuring out problems. Congratulations, just remember that every child meets those developmental milestones at different ages. The only time to be concerned or truly shocked is when a child is lagging 6 months or more behind, then you're looking at potentially needing therapy and testing. Your child is going to probably be a great reader very early so it's a great time to start reading lots of books and talking about things that you think might be too advanced for him because he is soaking up more than you know!
