How do Polar Bear's eyes withstand below freezing temperatures?
It's easy to understand how four inches of blubber and a thick fur coat can protect the Polar Bear, but how is it that their eyes withstand freezing?
The same way that the bears nose does not freeze. Basically blood is warm, and it is supplied to the bear's eyes and nose. People get frost bite because when we suffer from hypothermia (a fall in the body temperature below safe levels), our body automatically cut off blood supply to the extremities, such as our nose and fingers and toes, in order to keep the core temperature (liver, kidneys, lungs, and heart) as high as possible. That is because we suffer major organ failure and die if the core temperature falls. Losing fingers and toes to frostbite is bad, but it is better than dying. Since the polar bear is well insulated, it does not suffer from hypothermia and need not cut off blood supply to the extremities. Therefore its eyes and nose are warmed by blood and they don't freeze. They do lose much more heat through their eyes and nose and even ears, but the rest of their body is so well insulated that it does not matter.
