Tudor Style

Were 1950 style houses built more structurally sound than the newer homes of today?

I am interested in a 1950's style ranch house although I also like the Tudor homes and Craftsman style bungalows.

Not only are they not necessarily more structurally sound, but there are a lot of materials from back then that are no longer used in construction because they are hazardous or toxic. There used to be asbestos in floor and ceiling tiles, lead in paint, and lead in solder (if not lead in pipes). Some of the paperboard siding also had asbestos as could water pipe insulation.

If there is friable (material that can become airborne) asbestos in the house it can be VERY expensive to remove.

Fuses are generally not as effective or reliable as a circuit breaker box. Wiring wasn't handling the electrical loads of today.

Generally, lots of aspects of houses were worse back then.

good luck!
