Vintage pocket watches?
I have a pocket watch i was given by my grandpa and i was wondering about the history of it. On the face of it it says Elgin and on the inside it says Hamilton which are both watch companies. I was wondering if anyone could give me a reason why? Also the serial number is 171712 so if you could give me the model and how much you think its worth that would be awesome.
If the serial number you gave is correct, what you have is a Hamilton grade 925 movement. It's an 18 size, 17 jewel movement that was part of group of movements finished on 7/14/1902, and sold on 8/4/1902.
As far as it saying "Elgin" on the dial-American watches dials are relatively easy to install and remove. I don't know off hand if an 18 size Elgin dial will fit an 18 size Hamilton movement directly, although it's possible to adapt any correctly size dial to fit. If you watch movement says "Hamilton", it most certainly is a Hamilton movement.
The 925, although a good movement, is common and not particularly high grade. The value is probably under $100 with the incorrect Elgin dial.
